Updates on the restoration work - the Hiroshima Panels and other collaborative works

By Yumi Iwasaki | Project Leader

As you are well aware, the paintings at the Maruki Gallery have been facing serious problems from damage caused by the Gallery's aging exhibition halls and archival warehouse, which lack controls for temperature and humidity, as well as protection from UV rays, insects, and dust.

So, while we work on a plan to construct a new building, we also started the restoration of the paintings. Today, we would like to highlight two videos showing the restoration process of The Hiroshima Panels (I): Ghosts and other collaborative works painted by the Marukis.

Preserving Maruki Iri and Maruki Toshi ’s Art for Future Generations Mural Restoration Project  (19m51s)

From September 14 to October 29, 2021, restoration of four mural paintings, "The Rape of Nanking," "Auschwitz," "Minamata," and "Minamata, Nuclear Power, Sanrizuka,” was conducted at the Maruki Gallery. This video includes commentary about the works by Okamura Yukinori, curator of the Maruki Gallery, and an interview on the restoration work, with Nakatsuka Hiroyuki, representative of Yushodo.

The Hiroshima Panels (I): Ghosts The Necessity of Restoration and What Lies Ahead (7m07s)

On Dec. 16, 2021, Ghosts, the first of Maruki Iri and Maruki Toshi’s collaborative work the Hiroshima Panels, was taken from the Maruki Gallery for the Hiroshima Panels for full-scale restoration work at the Institute for Conservation of Cultural Property Aichi University of the Arts. In this video, we will explain why it was necessary to restore Ghosts.

Your support has made it possible for us to carry out these restoration works. We would like to thank you once again.

We will send you an update on the construction plant in our next report!
