Protecting the Big 5 in South Africa

Protecting the "Big 5" in Africa — the lion, leopard, rhinoceros, elephant, and buffalo — is an urgent task that requires a multi-faceted approach. These iconic species face numerous threats, including poaching, habitat loss, human-wildlife conflict, and the illegal wildlife trade. A combination of strong conservation efforts, policy changes, and community engagement is necessary to safeguard their future.

As you are aware we have begun protection with large national parks in Africa that have a number of supporting ranger staff for protection, Rhino is still currently our biggest threat due to the large value put on a Rhino;s horn, even though these horn's could be removed without killing the animal, poachers are often unexperienced and so using helicopters and other methods they search for the rhino's break into the parks and kill the animal for the horn as it offers the fastest approach. 

Poachers are putting more and more funding into operations as the value is always increasing in the Asia black markets. This means we have had to up our game too with your support we now have a number of rangers across all parks equipped with motion detective camera alerting the team and we have enhanced radio communications across all parks. We have introduced ex-racehorses that have been doanted to us and do not cause any danger to the Big 5 so we are now using horses for checking the permameters of the parks, cutting our cost of fuel and bringing our operations more inline with our carbon commitment. 

As well as horses we have a large number of trained K9's that work alongside our rangers in tracking and chasing poachers, we have been very successful with catching 12 poachers over the past 6 months and stopping many more attempts, we also have not lost a rhino over the past 3 months so we can see our efforts are working and this is down to your support!

Hello to all our Supporters, Donors, Friends and Family! 

We only do what we do with you beside us, we are the rock to so many communities around the world but you are our rock! 

Over the past 2 years we have seen a steady decrease in funding to many of our programs and as a charity we decided that it was time for change. Traditionally we have been putting 100% of the funding into our projects and keeping them alive so funding feeding programs, research, equipment and other essential items. 

While this is still a critical part of our work with the decrease in donations we need to step up our long term sustainability plans and therefore we have increased our professional volunteering and mentoring program that connects people in the community with qualified and experienced mentors around the world. 

Using this mentorship we have started to work with each community and build a plan that will lead to the community being setup to fight the issues they face themselves, it's a transition period that won't happen overnight however rather than putting funding just to "surviving" requirements we have now been able to use donated funds and volunteering hours to train community members, build websites and install local income generation projects that will take the pressure of fundraising. 

It is a really exciting time and we continue to look for people that are willing to donate their time as a mentor and not just focused  on people donating funds, we still need those incredible funding donation gifts but we are excited to expand our team to mentor, inspire and support community members to building their own project to change their future.
