Saving Lives at Birth quarter report

By Ruth Nakalembe | Program Officer

1. Introduction
In this quarter, our team focused on reaching vulnerable pregnant women and newborns with lifesaving maternal health services in Kawempe Division. Through antenatal care outreach, education, and birth preparedness, we supported 60+ expectant mothers and strengthened community health systems through Village Health Teams (VHTs). Your generous support is making birth safer in one of Uganda’s most underserved areas.

2. Key Activities This Quarter
a. Antenatal Care (ANC) Outreach

Conducted 5 community ANC days across parishes.

Reached 345 pregnant women with free ANC checkups, counseling, iron and folic acid supplementation.

5 women were identified with high-risk pregnancies and referred for specialized care.

b. Birth Preparedness Education

Trained 22 Village Health Teams (VHTs) on identifying danger signs in pregnancy.

VHTs conducted home visits and sensitized 100 households.

c. Male Involvement in Maternal Health

Held 2 male engagement dialogues reaching 85 men.

Discussed their roles in supporting safe deliveries, attending ANC visits, and emergency planning.

d. Neonatal Care Support

Supplied 4 health centers with clean delivery kits, gloves, and newborn resuscitation masks.

Facilitated a mentorship session for 16 midwives on neonatal resuscitation.

3. Impact Highlights
Reduced delays: Over 70% of pregnant women reached this quarter reported increased readiness for delivery.

Improved access: Women reported fewer barriers in reaching facilities, largely due to improved referral support through VHTs.

Strengthened community linkages: Collaboration between health workers and VHTs increased timely identification and support for high-risk mothers.

4. Conclusion
This quarter’s activities demonstrate that targeted, community-driven maternal and newborn health interventions can make a significant difference. With your continued support, we can expand this lifesaving work, reach more families, and ensure that no mother or baby dies from preventable causes.
