Summary

The Punta Arena Resilient project focuses on empowering women and children of the island community of Punta Arena on Tierra Bomba, near Cartagena, Colombia. It has three main objectives: Developing sustainable economic opportunities through ecotourism and local entrepreneurship; Preserving the community's historical culture and promoting the arts; and protecting the surrounding marine coastal ecosystems through environmental initiatives and educational programs at the local school.

Challenge

The problem is that local island communities in Cartagena are struggling to survive because their livelihoods (mainly fishing) are endangered. Without economic alternatives based on conservation, like community eco-tourism, people are finding it hard to make a living. On top of that their traditional culture is disappearing and the environment they rely on is being damaged. This threatens their way of life, their future and the health of the land and sea that support them.

Solution

Fundacion Bahia will strengthen the local economy through eco-tourism routes doing workshops and investing in the community. We'll help conserve traditional culture by recording or writing their stories to share with children and celebrating traditions and customs. Lastly, we'll protect the environment, clean the oceans, educate locals, making sure the land and sea stay healthy and continue to support the community. Together, these efforts will help islanders have a better more secure future.

Long-Term Impact

The long-term impact of this project will be that the local women can survive and thrive through more stable livelihoods. By creating sustainable alternatives, protecting the environment, islanders will be able to earn a living and stay. Recovering their historical culture will help future generations stay connected to their heritage and a healthy ecosystem will continue to provide resources and support life. Overall, this project will help strengthen women and children for a better future.
