Challenge

Maternal mortality in Liberia is among the world's highest, with 725 deaths per 100,000 births and neonatal mortality at 37 per 1,000. Because continuing professional development is not required for midwives, training remains fragmented and inconsistent. This creates gaps in skills and weak coordination across the health system. Strengthening ongoing education is essential to improving care for mothers and newborns. Enhanced training will help standardize practice and ensure safer outcomes.

Solution

This project builds on five years of collaboration between Friends of Liberia and the Liberian Health Team to deliver hands-on continuing professional development for nursing and midwifery faculty and clinicians from 21 training institutions. Participants gain updated skills in safe delivery, newborn care, and emergency response. They will then train students and staff, creating a multiplier effect that strengthens competencies and improves maternal and newborn care nationwide.

Long-Term Impact

This long-term partnership among the Liberian Health Team, Friends of Liberia, and national nursing institutions has improved teaching and clinical practice across 21 schools, reaching hundreds of professionals. Each trained participant mentors others, multiplying skills across classrooms and clinics. Continuing this effort will build a strong nationwide network of nurses and midwives who provide safer, consistent care for mothers and newborns and strengthen the health system for lasting impact.
