For 30 years, we have accompanied young women from Indigenous, Afro-Mexican, and rural communities in Oaxaca, Mexico, so they can continue their high school and university studies. Through this project, we will provide scholarships and in-person training to 26 young women who will be enrolled in high school during the 2025-2026 school year, creating a close and supportive space for care, accompaniment, and growth.
In Oaxaca, Mexico, the indigenous population is 65.7% of the total. There is a 29% illiteracy rate for 15 year old women (and older), while men of the same age range have a rate of 16.4 %. In the indigenous and rural communities of the state, there are very few opportunities for girls and young women to have access to upper secondary and higher education.
With this project, talented young indigenous women of Oaxaca, who have demonstrated a high level of academic achievement and who become role models for other women in their communities, will have scholarship assistance for an additional year of their studies. The Fondo Guadalupe Musalem also provides shelter, for young women who require it, to continue their university studies in Oaxaca. It is important to emphasize that we provide them with comprehensive training and support to carry it out.
The beneficiaries of the Fondo Guadalupe Musalem come from small communities, 2,500 inhabitants or less. They are an important example for other young women from their villages. With the education they are able to receive from our program, they continue to conduct and implement activities that assist others in their community and contribute to the common good.
