Final Update for Academic Year 2025

By Timor Karimy | Founder & President

Thank you for your generous support to Scholarships for At-risk Youth in Afghanistan.

In the academic year 2025, we supported a total of 181 students (142 girls and 39 boys) in various regular schools and underground schools in Afghanistan in the academic year 2025. In addition, we supported an Education Center that served 290 girls with tutoring services. With this years tally, we have supported 1,671 students (1181 girls and 490 boys) since the start of the program in 2016. Our schools and programs are located in the marginalized and persecuted Hazara communities in Afghanistan. For safety reasons, we keep our schools, teachers and students anonymous.

From the inception of Bamyan’s youth education program in 2016, we have prioritized supporting community-led educational initiatives at grassroots level. Through such community-led and community-sustained programs, girls and boys continue their education in regular schools (mostly boys and girls below grade 6), underground schools (girls above grade 6 who are otherwise banned from schools) and Education centers for girls from grades 7-12. The education center offers classes in Math, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, English and computers among other subjects. Due to our continuous support and the impact on the ground, some of our schools have become well respected local institutions over the years.

At the end of each academic year, we review the programs and determine what programs to include, add and/or drop in the following academic year in light of the fundraising challenges and other issues on the ground.

This update is about the progress of the 39 boys in our schools, and we will provide a separate update about the girls’ progress via our project Support Girls’ Education in Afghanistan. The final exams took place in late November and early December 2025.

We are pleased to inform you that 35 boys passed their final exams and have progressed to the higher grades. Three boys failed their finals and will repeat their classes and one boy did not participate due to his family relocating from the area. We are glad to hear that one of the boys graduated high school due to Bamyan’s continuous support for six years.

According to one of our school principals - the situation is dire in the marginalized Hazara area in Taliban-controlled Afghanistan. The ban on girls’ education, bleak economic outlook, lack of skilled/literate professionals in the various government departments combined with racial and religious discrimination towards the Hazaras by the Taliban cast immense negative impact on the young minds. Many students suffer from depression and anxiety and are extremely pessimistic of the future. Such bitter realities directly affect their education and outlook on life. Despite the challenges, the schools in consultation with the parents continue to listen to the students, offer extracurricular activities in the form of science and art projects, academic and sports competitions to uplift their spirits, and remind them about the value of education and the support from Bamyan Foundation and the community abroad to to instill hopes of a better tomorrow.

Here are some of the comments from our resilient students. We have changed their names due to our safety policy.

Qader, whose grades were low in the mid-terms, performed much better in the final exams. He said, “when I saw my mid-term results, I felt responsible towards the people supporting my education. I decided to to do better so that I don’t waste their gift.”

Amin, who graduated high school, is immensely grateful to Bamyan’s scholarship and believes that Bamyan’s support of six years played a crucial role towards helping him graduate high school. He is attending a university next year.

The Bamyan team will continue to spread the word and raise funds to support these crucial programs every year. The new academic year begins in March and we will provide updates about the 2026 academic year in our next reports.

Thank you for your generous support that enables our team to continue this meaningfu work.
