Self-Defence Training in Warud
The team at Prabodhini Self-Defence Institute is getting bigger and stronger! Manisha, our self-defence trainer, is currently training two new recruits. This will enable the Prabodhini Institute to organise more trainings and reach out to more girls.
Recently, the trainers have started conducting self-defence trainings outside Nagpur. Two trainings, each lasting for fours days, were conducted in Amravati and Warud. Here, the trainers realised that neighbouring cities did not have the same opportunities and awareness regarding self-defence trainings despite higher cases of violence against women. The new recruits can now support the team to move beyond the peripheries of Nagpur in order to train more girls and women.

Kasak's inspirational journey

Kasak during the self-defence classes
Hear from Kasak in her own words as to how self-defence classes have improved her confidence and changed her life:
"I live in Nagpur. Once, while I was walking home with my friends, a guy followed me and asked for my phone number. I refused to give it to him after which he held my wrist tightly and asked again. I was terrified and numb. Even though I did not give him my number, he sourced it from someone else and started harassing me with his phone calls.
After a while, I met Manisha and she motivated me to join the self defense classes. Apart from learning self-defence techniques, I shared my problems with our trainer, Manisha. She gave me the confidence to answer this guy's calls and warn him to not harass me any more. I mustered all the confidence that I had and confronted this person on the call and threatened to call the police if he continues to harass me. After this incident, he never tried to call or follow me again. I will recommend every girl to join these self defence classes."
We are proud of girls like Kasak who are willing to change their lives and learn to say an emphatic 'NO' whenever the need to do so arises.
Help us continue supporting girls like Kasak in the future.
Regards,
Karuna Team

Anita and Manisha have survived COVID-19

Manisha and Anita are thankful for the support
We are relieved that our two self-defense trainers Anita and Manisha are doing better. They are now recovering well after their Covid infection. Especially Anita went through a tough phase as it was uncertain if she will survive the COVID infection. Fortunately, friends and the director of Prabodhini Mahila Foundation managed to admit her in a reasonably well-equipped hospital. As a single mother of a small child - and without financial reserves - she would have likely become part of the statistics related to COVID deaths.
We are immensely thankful to our donors at GlobalGiving without whose support this would not have been possible.
The lockdown restrictions have been easing and the self-defense trainings can resume with COVID-related precautions.
