Summary

51.7% of Peruvians-17.6 million people-live with food insecurity. 1 in 5 went a full day without eating. In Lima, 48% of households report hunger. In the Andes, families face food shortages, anaemia, and lack of basic services. This 2025, we'll provide meals to 140 children at a public school in Lima and food baskets to families in Jangas, Huaraz (with Operacion Mato Grosso). We do this with teachers, families, and neighbors who act every day. Hunger persists. So do the people. So do we.

Challenge

Nuevo Amanecer del Paraiso is a community in Lima, just 20 minutes from the Presidential Palace, where most homes still lack water and sewage. 48% of households in the city report food insecurity. In Jangas, a rural district Huaraz, in the Andes, families face similar conditions: unstable access to food, limited public services, and lack of job offers. Both communities are affected by rising food prices, low income, and limited state presence. The most immediate need is access to regular meals.

Solution

This project aims to provide daily meals to 140 children at a public school in Lima, where food is prepared on site by the school's team, and monthly food baskets to families in Jangas, through coordination with Operacion Mato Grosso. Both actions are managed with local partners-teachers, mothers, and neighbors-who already take part in food-related efforts. With funding, we can ensure stable delivery, reliable sourcing, and continuity in both urban and rural areas, where the government does not.

Long-Term Impact

Regular food provision creates the conditions for stability and participation. While daily meals are being implemented, we continue working with our community partners-in Lima and in Jangas-through our TRAMA project (also on GlobalGiving). These actions are part of a longer-term collaboration focused on education and community-led work. Daily access to food is the minimum every human being needs. Without it, nothing else can hold. Dignity begins with meeting needs-no one should be left behind.
