Meet Gamere - finally pain free after 10 years

By Ciara Baumgartner | Fundraising Officer

Meet Gamere, a 54-year-old mother from Ethiopia who had been enduring the distress of watery and painful eyes.

Unfortunately, her eye pain took a toll on her ability to care for her five children. Simple tasks such as cooking for her children and fetching water became challenges for her. Gamere’s eye pain left her unable to venture outside without assistance, leaving her completely dependent on her children for support. This situation made it crucial for Gamere to find a solution and regain her independence. Gamere attempted to resolve this issue by taking a visit to the closest clinic where she was given an eye ointment. However, the results were disappointing and ended up not helping at all.

Desperate for answers, Gamere visited the Doko Masho Health Center in Chencha, Ethiopia. With mounting concern, she received a crucial diagnosis: Trachomatous Trichiasis, a condition known to lead to blindness if left untreated. The urgency of the situation led Gamere to seek immediate medical intervention from Orbis. By addressing her trachomatous trichiasis through surgery, Orbis enabled Gamere to regain her vision and alleviate the pain that hindered her daily life. With her vision restored, she experienced a significant improvement in her quality of life. She could once again care for her children, engage in daily activities with ease, and witness her children attending school.

Gamere’s journey is a powerful testament to the transformative impact of Orbis’s work in providing essential eye care services to those in need. By providing critical eye care services, training healthcare professionals, and implementing sustainable eye care programs, Orbis continues to make a difference in the lives of countless individuals like Gamere, enabling them to regain their vision and live fulfilling lives.
