Amavedh suffered with trachoma for nearly two years; she could hardly see and her eyes were watery and extremely painful.
Her suffering was prolonged as she didn’t know what was wrong or what could be done. Even with her pain and poor sight she had to continue to look after her children and husband, but she struggled every day.
Then one day an Orbis trained health worker made an announcement in her area about trachoma treatment. This was her first encounter with Orbis, now she sings its praises!
She had a simple surgery at the Gereshe Health Centre. It was performed by an Orbis-trained Eye Care Worker and within days she was pain free and could see again. Collecting water and cooking were once again simple chores.
Amavedh said “now there is no pain. I am ok now. I can look after my family now. Everyone in my community knows what to do if they have eye problems and where to go. Now I know how to protect my children against trachoma too.”
