Amarech lives in Zaga in southern Ethiopia. She works as a farmer and has six children; three boys and three girls. Her eldest child is nine and her youngest is two. There are nine people living in her home including her husband and her sister.
For three years Amarech suffered with discomfort in her eyes. Her eldest child had trachoma and she had used the ointment that the health centre had given him to treat herself. However, this only caused the pain to go away temporarily and then she suffered from re-infection.
Amarech walked the 5KM to her local health centre after she was told by an Orbis trainied health care worker that she would get the treatment she needed. She trusted Orbis as both her husband and sister had successful surgery at Geresse Health Centre by an Orbis-trained nurse.
Amarech had trichiasis surgery on her left eye and afterwards she said she was only in a little pain. She then embarked on the 5km walk home alone.
Amarech no longer suffers any pain or discomfort in her eye. She received surgery just in time - without treatment she would have been permanently blind.
Thanks to your support Orbis can continue to prevent people from a world of unnecessary blindness.
