Genzebe is a 12-year-old boy who lives with his family in a small town in southern Ethiopia. Genzebe had never been to school. He was forced to stay at home while his siblings and peers attended school every day.
For over four years Genzebe had been suffering from repeated trachoma infections that lead to in-turned eyelashes rubbing against the eyeball.
As his condition worsened, Genzebe wouldn’t go out to play with his friends on sunny days as the sunlight caused him unbearable pain. The white discharge also stopped him from wanting to join his friends in play. Genzebe became housebound and lonely as a result.
One day a neighbour, who had undergone eye surgery, informed Genzebe’s mother about the free eye care service available at Genta Bonke Primary Eye Care Unit (PECU). Genzebe’s mother, who was unable to pay for her son’s treatment, was thrilled.
Genzebe, accompanied by his mother, made their way to Genta Primary Eye Care Unit as soon as they heard the information. After travelling for more than one and a half hours on foot, they reached Genta PECU. At the center, Genzebe’s eyes were examined and he was found to be suffering from repeated trachoma infections in both eyes. In just 43 minutes, the surgery was completed with successful results.
Now Genzebe can start school, which is a dream come true!
Thanks to your generous support, Orbis can help children like Genzebe lead a normal and pain-free childhood..... something every child deserves!
