Sewing machines for Sindhi teenage girls in Pakistan

The Big Idea
Our tailoring project will enable 50 Sindhi teenage girls to learn to sew. They will complete a 6-month apprenticeship and learn to make clothes to sell within their village and at market for a small, but vitally important income. Sindhi girls need to supplement income from working in the fields.
Sindhi girls are victimized and discriminated against in many ways. They suffer violence and indignity; their work in rural pakistan is limited to daily 'household' work - manual work in rice and cotton fields involving back-breaking, long hours under the hot sun - for very little pay. They desperately need an opportunity to earn money independently and our tailoring project would solve this problem by teaching skills that can be used to generate further income.
We want to provide 50 sindhi woman with sewing machines and a teacher. Once the women have learnt to sew, any income derived from making clothes will help to buy food for their family. At the same time it will give them self-respect as well as the opportunity to save money for the months during the year when there is no work available in the fields - typically 4 months per year. Sewing machines can be shared between 2 giving more sindhi women the opportunity to learn this skill.
Our project will give oppressed sindhi women greater financial independence. Also it will give them increased self-respect, as well as respect from others in their village, especially the men. In time, these women will pass on their sewing skills to their daughters and friends thus extending the benefits of this project to more sindhi families in need. Sindhi women work extremely well together as a group - they will support one another in future by sharing their machines.
There is a risk of not being able to secure the funding for all of the sewing machines.
Donors will be sent regular reports about the tailoring project via email, containing photographs and accounts from the sindhi women and girls who have benefitted from being taught how to sew. Project updates will also be posted regularly on our website www. ahdpak.org
