Education is a key to opportunity

By Julia Matthew | Managing Director

Dear Patron,

A good education is one of the most important things a person can have. It opens the door to opportunities and helps to break the cycle of poverty. But it’s not the same for those living in the slums. The state of education in slums is often poor. This is because they lack the resources that are essential for providing a good education.

Education is the only tool that can sustainably break a child out of the intergenerational cycle of poverty and exploitation. To help all such children have a better future, El Shaddai is educating 700 + children in Goa by running slum schools. With our 25 years of work with these children in the slum communities of Goa, we have learnt that when we empower children with education, they are free to access information, and make wise and informed choices for themselves today and in the future. Education rescues children from the mindset of poverty that they are surrounded by and empowers them to find their purpose, enjoy their rights and live with dignity.

The children in the slums are taught alphabets, numbers, arts and crafts, and many other co-curricular activities. Health camps, awareness programmes and counselling sessions are held along with the distribution of monthly rations, school kits, and cooked meals every day for the students and their families.

We have a story of a little girl age 8 years old, named Payal (name changed) her father is an alcoholic and often beats the mother. She has to care for her infant siblings while her mother works as a domestic help. Every day she would wake up to this traumatic scenario of physical abuse. She made up her mind that she did not want to end up like her mother and to do that she would need to be educated and find a good job. Through El Shaddai’s support, she got the opportunity to study and change her destiny. Her dream is now to enrol in a formal school and walk towards a better future with hope and dedication.

We aim to reach out to more and more children like these and aid in changing their futures. We like to extend our gratitude to you all for making our goal of Education for 1000 slum children in Goa come true.

Best wishes from the El Shaddai Family!

Your’s sincerely
