Dear Friend,
In many parts of the world, girls living in slums face significant barriers to education. Poverty, lack of resources, cultural norms, and unsafe environments make it difficult for these young girls to access quality education. In slums, families often struggle with financial instability. Girls are frequently expected to contribute to household income by working in informal sectors or caring for younger siblings, leaving little time or resources for schooling. Having seen the sad plight of these slum children, El Shaddai started schools so that everyone gets the right to education. El Shaddai runs formal and non-formal schools in Goa and Karnataka.
Education can help girls from slums escape the cycle of poverty. With the right education, they can gain skills and knowledge that will enable them to secure better job opportunities, improve their standard of living, and break free from the limitations imposed by their environment.
Education for slum girls is not just a right but a catalyst for social transformation. We have a beautiful story of a girl named Purnima (name changed), she was born into a world of limited opportunities, where poverty, inadequate housing, and lack of resources were the daily realities. Her family struggled to make ends meet, with her father working long hours as a labourer and her mother helping with household chores. She often dreamed of going to school like the other girls passing by her house every day but her parents felt that her help was more needed at the house and ultimately the education would not be of any use since she would be married someday. But everything changed one day when she came across an El-Shaddai volunteer who told her parents the importance of education. The parents after hearing about our schools decided to send her the next day.
She is very happy now as she is learning so much and wants to keep learning and change her future to a better one. By investing in these girl’s education, we are not only changing their lives but also empowering future generations. Providing education for slum girls helps break down the barriers of poverty, inequality, and violence, leading to healthier, more prosperous communities. Every girl deserves a chance to learn, dream, and achieve her fullest potential.
To date, El Shaddai has provided education for 1,51,333 girls and we have been able to achieve this wonderful cause only with the love and support provided by generous supporters like you all and for playing a pivotal role in enabling us to continue our work to provide education, support, and resources to those in need.
El Shaddai family!
