Jiya's Story: Breaking the Silence Around Periods

By Debadutta Dash | President

My name is Jiya, and I study in class 8 at Government Girls School, Badshahpur. I live with my parents — my father, Jacky, and my mother, Jaya — in Badshahpur.

In my family and community, people still don’t talk openly about periods. They believe that menstruation is impure and untouchable. I experienced this discrimination personally one day. My grandmother was performing prayers in the worship room when she needed a matchbox to light a lamp. I quickly took it to her, wanting to help. But as soon as she saw me, she pushed me away harshly and shouted, “You shouldn’t come here! You are on your periods!”

That moment broke me. I felt deeply hurt and ashamed. For days, I kept blaming myself and thinking — “Why does this happen to me? Am I really impure?” I started feeling guilty for something that was completely natural.

Everything changed after I attended the Gender Equality Program by Sukarya. The training sessions helped me understand the truth about menstruation — that it is not impure, not shameful, and not something to hide.

Today, I no longer feel guilty or ashamed.
I have learned that periods are normal — and so am I.

The program gave me confidence, knowledge, and pride in being a girl. Now, I openly talk about menstrual health with my friends and even with my family. I want others to know what I have learned — that menstruation is natural, healthy, and a sign of strength, not impurity.
