Friends of Liberia's Small Grants Committee provides funding up to $3,000 USD and capacity-strengthening support to local Liberian nonprofits, with a strong emphasis on projects that are identified and shaped by the communities they serve. Past projects include supplying schools with classroom desks, books, and safer classrooms, training motorbike drivers in road safety, installing hundreds of toilets in school and community latrines, training girls in healthy menstrual practices and many more.
The current funding ecosystem in Liberia faced major strain after significant U.S. foreign assistance cuts in 2025, especially from USAID, which once funded nearly half of the national health budget and supported education initiatives like school feeding. At the same time, traditional funding avenues often prioritize large-scale, top-down initiatives, leaving little room for small, community-identified and community-led projects that address highly localized needs.
This crisis creates space for more locally driven support. Friends of Liberia's Small Grants Program provides flexible, community-led funding directly to grassroots organizations, prioritizing projects identified by Liberians themselves. By supporting local leadership and adaptable solutions, these grants strengthen resilience and helps communities address urgent needs while building a more sustainable, self-reliant future.
Over the long term, this approach strengthens local capacity, leadership, and ownership of development efforts. By investing in community-identified solutions, it builds trust, skills, and systems that endure beyond a single grant. Integrated capacity-building opportunities, open to all Liberian nonprofit stakeholders, further strengthen skills in project design, budgeting, and accountability. Together, this fosters a resilient, self-sustaining ecosystem driven by local priorities.
