Dear Supporters,
The Dawasamu / Bureiwai Waste Management Programme has been implemented to improve waste disposal. Recycling points have been built in the villages, where families can recycle their tin cans, glass, hard plastics, aluminium & ceramics instead of burning waste or using landfills. Focusing on education & behaviour change prior to the construction of recycling points, followed by effective monitoring & additional workshops. This sustainable solution puts ownership directly in the hands of the villagers.
GVI Dawasamu Community Project as now teamed up with the communities of the neighbouring District of Bureiwai which consists of 4 villages and 1 primary school to work together towards long-term sustainable goals and achievements in waste management. Getting community members to make the right choices every day is a huge part in running a success recycling programme and education has been a key component and is needed to make sure community members know what to recycle, when to recycle, where to recycle and how to recycle. Through monthly monitoring in conjunction with the headman of each village GVI assesses the recycling point looking at what has been recycled, how it has been recycled i.e. tins are clean. From the data collected a decision can be made on what further training is required or if the village have enough recycling points to ensure that there is adequate space to store recycled items.
Since 2016 – 2019 Dawasamu and Bureiwai district have recycled 11.5 tons of waste which is a combination of hard plastic, glass, tin and aluminium. This an enormous achievement by the communities and shows their dedication towards keeping their villages clean which benefits the health and well being of all who live there.
“All recycling begins with a decision, a choice, an action. The right choice can have a significant impact on a community’s environment. “
We would like to thank all donors who have contributed to our “Small Island Recycling & Waste Management Dawasamu and Bureiwai” in Fiji and helping us work towards a sustainable waste management programme. The district of Dawasamu and Bureiwai implementation is now complete and only monthly monitoring is required This now gives us the opportunity to look at the next two adjacent districts of Nemana and Sawakasa Community members from the two districts have requested our help in implementing the waste management project within their communities. Being able to implement the waste management project into more districts would be a great achievement and beneficial to the communities living environment and health and well-being so every penny you donate can help make this happen.
With Gratitude,
Fiji Dawasamu Recycling
