Dear Supporters,
Our Dawasamu Community Project has teamed up with the communities of Dawasamu and Bureiwai Districts which consists of 15 villages, 4 schools and a health centre to work together towards long-term sustainable goals and achievements in waste management. Through baseline research, educational workshops, community empowerment, and the provision of 28 recycling points across the whole district, regular monitoring and data collection we have seen the programme established as the Dawasamu and Bureiwai Waste Management Programme.
In March 2020 we started discussions with the headmen of the districts of Sawakasa and Nemana which comprises of 24 villages. Earlier in the year, we were requested by the district nurses of both areas in implementing the waste management programme within their districts, they had seen what had been accomplished in the districts of Dawasamu and Bureiwai which benefited the environment and health and well being of the communities. Due to COVID 19, the implementation dates have been put back to later in the year, though work with the community health works will recommence in July on a one to one basis’s and the workshops will incorporate waste management discussions and teach aids /resources to help them to start educating their communities about how to recycle and the benefits.
Education is a key component and is needed to make sure community members know what to recycle when to recycle, where to recycle and, how to recycle. Such education is needed to change behaviour and to create a culture where the benefits of recycling are understood.
In March the communities of Dawasamu and Bureiwai district have recycled another 1.35 tons of hard plastic, glass, tin, and aluminium. This in total now stands at 15.55 tons of waste.
We would like to thank all donors who have contributed to our “Small Island Recycling & Waste Management Dawasamu and Bureiwai” in Fiji and helping us work towards a sustainable waste management programme. We are looking forward to the opportunity to work with the districts of Nemana and Sawakasa.
With Gratitude,
Fiji Dawasamu Recycling
