The Spirulina for Malnourished Children in Ethiopia project (#40132) continues to make meaningful progress in addressing child malnutrition while building sustainable community capacity. Since the last update:
30 students received hands-on training in Spirulina production at the school level, learning practical skills for growing, harvesting, and processing Spirulina to support their peers and families.
40 children suffering from stunting and undernutrition were provided Spirulina supplementation, resulting in observable improvements in weight, energy levels, and school engagement.
Two school-based Spirulina production units were successfully established, creating ongoing access to nutrient-rich supplements for the children and fostering community ownership of the initiative.
This project continues to combine immediate nutritional support with long-term capacity building, providing a sustainable model for combating malnutrition in Ethiopia.
Learning from Challenges
The project has faced intermittent challenges such as irregular school attendance and delays in raw material supply due to seasonal factors. To address these issues:
Alternative supply channels were established to prevent interruptions in Spirulina production.
Training sessions were adjusted to match school calendars and improve attendance.
Community awareness campaigns were intensified to increase participation and support for Spirulina production.
Case Studies and Testimonials
Case Study:
Lemlem, a 7-year-old girl, was severely underweight before joining the Spirulina feeding program. After two months of daily Spirulina supplementation, she gained healthy weight, showed increased energy, and actively participated in classroom activities.

Final Reflection and Appeal
This project has gone beyond providing short-term nutrition; it has empowered communities with knowledge, skills, and sustainable solutions to malnutrition. By training students and supporting vulnerable children, we are creating a replicable model for Ethiopia and beyond.
To sustain and expand this work, we need additional resources to strengthen production units, reach more children, and provide ongoing training. Support from partners and donors will directly improve the health, well-being, and future opportunities for malnourished children across the region.
