Over the last 8 weeks, the streets of Langa, Masiphumelele and Khayelitsha have been bustling with hundreds of children taking part in street cricket and street soccer tournaments – organised in partnership with our friends at Sporting Chance. The street sports programmes are designed to provide a fun and safe after school environment for nearly 500 children up to the age of 12 from several local communities in Cape Town, whilst encouraging healthy lifestyles and building teamwork skills amongst the participants. The Street Cricket programme itself forms part of Cricket South Africa’s development pipeline – and it’s thanks to our generous donors that some of these children may be scouted whilst taking part in the street adaptation of the famous sport.
8 year old from Langa even exclaimed her love for the program, “My favorite sport is cricket so I like watching my friends play. I want to play for South Africa when I am grown up and I can see the coaches help me get there”.
Things didn’t stop there, however! Just as schools closed for 2017, we welcomed approximately 520 children to Muizenburg beach where the cricket theme continued. The rivalries formed between teams from each respective community during the street sports programme remained evident despite the change of terrain, and led to a fantastic day of cricket on the beach for everyone involved.
Everyone at the African Impact Foundation would like to thank our incredible donors for making all of this possible – opening doors to sporting futures for so many children, whilst guaranteeing fun, safe, creative, and educational environments for all of the children in the run-up to the Christmas period. We all cannot wait for next year’s sports and could not do it again without your continued support!
