 Sixth Quarterly Report to GlobalGiving

Project title: Stop hunger for indigenous families in Honduras (53804)

The second quarter of 2023 was characterized by a drought that limited the establishment of agricultural crops since traditionally producing families wait for the May rains to plant corn and beans, this year the rains arrived in July. Another limitation has been the high cost of synthetic fertilizers for crop development. However, despite these difficulties, some families have established their staple grain crops as part of their food culture.

It is important to mention that the drought made it possible to harvest fruits of better quality, since in times of abundant rain, these fruits are lost or are of poor quality. In this quarter, the resources of the project have been invested in support of 15 indigenous women producers, members of three community organizations located in the municipalities of Intibucá, department of Intibucá and department of Marcala de La Paz.

Main achievements:

I contributed to the economic empowerment of women by adding value to the products produced in the community.

During this period, accompaniment and technical assistance has been provided to family production units in several communities where Red COMAL is present.

Two training workshops were held for the processing of jellies, jams and pickles with the participation of 15 women and 2 men, as well as the provision of inputs, materials and equipment to promote economic initiatives to three community organizations: Women in Action of Intibucá, Women Entrepreneurs and Collective of Alpha and Omega Women of La Paz, in order to generate the right conditions for the economic and social empowerment of rural and indigenous women.

Women have strengthened their knowledge and have now installed capacities. They are currently processing their vegetables into pickles and seasonal fruits (mangoes, peaches, peaches, blackberries and pineapples) into jams, jellies and syrup. These products are intended for family consumption and are expected to increase their production for sale in local markets.

On behalf of indigenous women, we reiterate our gratitude to all donors who, through GlobalGiving, provide financial support for a dignified life for women in Honduras.
