Ninth Quarterly Report for GlobalGiving
Project Title: Stop hunger for indigenous families in Honduras (53804)
During this quarter, farming families have been affected by prolonged droughts due to the effects of climate change. In many communities, especially those located in the dry corridor, the production of basic foodstuffs has decreased. Against this backdrop, the COMAL Network has prioritized support to rural families by strengthening livelihoods.
Main achievements:
In this period at least 50 families from the communities of the municipality of Nueva Frontera in the department of Santa Barbara, have been trained on agroecological production processes for the cultivation of short-cycle vegetables, efficient use of water, plotting of land to contour lines, integration of lime, chicken manure to the land and in the development of bio-inputs for pest and disease control in these crops.
Four agroecological plots were established with diversified crops of radish, squash, coriander, carrots, cucumber, beans, banana, corn and beans. Persian lemon, jade mango, and papaya fruit trees will also be planted. These crops are expected to contribute to the food security and sovereignty of the families and to generate income through the marketing of surplus production in local markets.
A geomembrane tank has been installed in each productive plot to store 15,000 liters of water and an irrigation system for the crops. In addition, the families have been provided with some basic equipment such as barrels and metal pots to produce bio-inputs.
On behalf of the community organizations and producers, we thank all the donors who, through GlobalGiving, are guaranteeing food sovereignty for rural families in Honduras.
