As we end off 2025 I think we can be relieved that our protest actions and strong voices of support were heard!
In our last report we noted that the Cape peninsula authorities (Joint Task Team – JTT) had intended to remove 120 baboons but as we close for the year the “plans on the table” from the JTT are to create a sanctuary for at least two of the troops under threat. In addition, we are told that the northern fence line will finally be installed and in doing so the northern population (6 troops of baboons) will be kept out of the vineyards and from urban areas and will stay safely in the Table Mountain National Park. So from 120 baboons facing death, we are now hopeful that non-lethal mitigation will be in place.
It seems that the JTT have taken cognizance of the Court Order we obtained in December 2024 and of the public protest this year, but we cannot rest easy as we have yet to see the final plans for the proposed sanctuary and timelines for the installation of the fences.
In addition to our work on the Cape peninsula and with smaller communities who are having to learn how to be good neighbours to wildlife , we have co-authored a draft position statement for the national minister of environment and will continue to work through our position on the national forum so that our clear message reaches his attention.
Our work has been very varied over this course of the year, from running a hugely successful protest campaign with our partners at Beauty Without Cruelty, Baboons of the South, Baboon Watch WC, Baboon Management WC and Green Group of Simons Town, to advocacy, field work and rescues of injured baboons – it has been non-stop.
We are so grateful for your on-going support, without your financial contributions we would not be able to get to injured baboons or to continue our advocacy work. Thank you for supporting baboons and for helping us to be their voice.
From all the baboons, we hope you have a restful end of year and a joyous time with family and friends. Thank you for helping us to help baboons.
