Fear to Freedom: A Young Mother's EMTCT Journey

By Dr Pasquine Ogunsanya | Project Leader

*Elsa* is a 27-year-old mother of three who has been living with HIV since she was 14 years old. She grew up with her brother after their parents abandoned them at a young age, which forced them to find ways to support themselves. While searching for opportunities, *Elsa* secured a job at a small restaurant. Unfortunately, she was taken advantage of by one of the customers, resulting in her HIV infection.
“I experienced some common symptoms, including significant weight loss. My brother, who was 19 at the time, brought me to Alive Medical Services to get tested and find out what was happening to me,” Elsa explained.
Elsa’s results were positive for HIV. When she learned of her status, life felt uncertain and full of fear. “I thought of reversing time to take me back and make a better choice in that moment. I was so afraid of what my future will now be.” Elsa sadly shares.
With time, counselling, and consistent treatment, along with the support of her brother, Elsa regained her health and strength. Now a proud mother of three, she received essential support through the Elimination of Mother-to-Child Transmission (EMTCT) program at Alive Medical Services during her pregnancies. Elsa diligently attended all her antenatal visits, adhered to her medication, which she continues to take, and followed all the guidance provided by the healthcare team at Alive Medical Services.
Today, her youngest child, a beautiful 7-month-old baby girl, is thriving and free of HIV. Elsa considers this her greatest victory, as it demonstrates that mothers living with HIV can protect their children and lead healthy, fulfilling lives with proper care.
Elsa advises and encourages young girls and women living with HIV to remain on their treatment and never lose hope of becoming mothers to healthy, HIV-free babies. For Elsa, eliminating mother-to-child transmission (EMTCT) has not only safeguarded her children’s futures but has also restored her confidence to dream once again.
Thanks to platforms like GlobalGiving, Alive Medical Services has secured resources to empower over 3,000 women living with HIV to raise happy and healthy children.
