Art Gets Us Through!

By Arianna Ross & the Story Tapestries Team | Executive Director

We are all longing for those connections that make this time of year special - holiday parties, gift exchanges, and precious time with family and friends. Attending in-person classes, the local school concert/play, annual productions of The Nutcracker and our favorite sports events are very missed.  Take just a moment to imagine how our kids feel.

For our children, COVID-19 is profoundly distressing.  Social isolation is a challenge, on top of the societal and economic unrest our children have been enduring (or witnessing the adults in their lives endure) for more than 300 days!  That’s a really long time.

The pandemic’s effects on our kids—and the ways in which art and storytelling can address some of these emotional and psychological issues—are beginning to emerge.  Scientific studies show us how art heals. Through artistic experiences, the body’s physiology changes from a state of stress to one of deep relaxation, from a state of fear to one of creativity, inspiration and hope.

3rd Grader, Gavin M,. said it best with his artwork and message: Arts Get Us Through

Story Tapestries programs and services create connections, whether in-person or online. In times of crisis, feeling a part of something and connected to others becomes more important than ever. Performances, workshops, after-school programs, summer camps and professional development programs are several ways in which we connect with youth experiencing economic hardship and the adults who interact with and support them.

Since the pandemic’s start, Story Tapestries has developed and safely delivered activity kits to over 860 families and engaged 10,930+ households in educational programming.  We are grateful to spread JOY in these difficult times, and to add some color and creativity to daily life for families who are struggling.

One of the ways we are spreading this joy with others, is by spreading the word with Swag that gives back to support Story Tapestries' vision and mission. Still looking for that perfect gift? Consider taking advantage of 15% off on everything in our Shop thru December 26. One of the featured designs is Gavin's work you see featured in this Report.

We are grateful for the Story Tapestries Family, and appreciate that YOU are a part of it!

Thank you for sharing with us so we might continue to shine light on your stories.

While this is an incredible difficult period, there is much to look forward to in 2021 and you are part of what will make it a great New Year!
