In December 2011 we asked for help - we launched a campaign to raise funds to teach literacy through the arts. The response has been overwhelming, and we're so grateful for the generous support we've received that continue to make Teaching Literacy Through the Arts possible. Thanks to the donations we've received, amongst other programs, in March 2012 we were able to offer two very special programs with bi-lingual performing and teaching artist, Carrie Sue Ayvar.
To share with you a bit of the power, passion, and purpose of your donation, here are a few words from Carrie Sue about her experience teaching at the Launch Zone at the National Children's Museum:
The children and their families - parents, grandparents and even some aunties - were engaged and actively involved in the storytelling. Not only did everyone leave with a new story to share but several were already telling me who they were going to tell it to! One of the highlights was when one of the grandmothers came up to me afterwards to tell me that she remembered one of the stories from her own childhood. She had never told it to her grandson and now could not wait to retell it with him to his mother!
Carrie Sue also was able to work in a DC Public School, Tyler Elementary, working in a bi-lingual classroom where challenges to read and write are even greater due to language:
About a month after I finished the residency I received a note and video from one of the Spanish Immersion Pre-school teachers. She said that "me tenia en mente", she had been thinking about me, and that I would "live a LONG time!" It seems that the children loved recalling and retelling the songs and stories (including utilizing all the physical gestures) that we shared and so I would "live a LONG time" because of the impact and influence that I had on her and her students. The Student and Teacher objectives were not only met but surpassed!
These stories are so important to share with you so you know the impact of your dollars. Your gift has helped young children explore the possibilities that story can offer, and they have gained an interest and excitement about reading and learning. These gifts will be carried within each person Story Tapestries programs reach - so that we will all "live a LONG time" as stories are remembered and shared.
