In Bali, too many mothers face depression and anxiety during pregnancy and postpartum without support. This project will train Bumi Sehat's midwives and nurses to recognize the signs, offer compassionate counseling, and connect women to care. A community workshop for 50 mothers will share knowledge, reduce stigma, and build hope-ensuring healthier, happier beginnings for mothers, babies, and families.
Maternal mental health is often overlooked in Bali, yet the impact on mothers, babies, and families can be profound. National surveys show 7-8% of Indonesian mothers experience depression during and/or after pregnancy, with studies in Bali reporting rates as high as 20-25%. Without proper training, many midwives cannot recognize early warning signs, leaving women to struggle in silence-risking their wellbeing, their relationships, and their children's healthy development.
This project will equip Bumi Sehat's midwives and nurses with the skills to identify maternal mental health issues early, offer compassionate, basic counseling, and refer severe cases for advanced care. Training will use culturally sensitive tools and approaches, ensuring relevance for Balinese women. In addition, a workshop for up to 50 women will provide vital education, coping strategies, and peer support, reducing stigma and encouraging help-seeking.
By building the capacity of healthcare providers and empowering women with knowledge, we can create lasting change. Early detection and support for depression and anxiety during pregnancy and postpartum can prevent long-term harm to mothers, children, and families. Over time, this project will normalize conversations about mental health, strengthen family bonds, and create a sustainable community network of awareness and care for mothers in Bali.
