Sudan Emergency Fund

Thank you for your generous contribution to the Sudan Emergency Fund. As we approach the second memorial of the war in Sudan, your donations continue to make a crucial difference, ensuring Sudanese-led NGOs can provide essential supplies, psychological care, cash assistance, livelihood opportunities, and most importantly, hope to their communities. 

Take, for example, People-to-People (PTP), a new partner of GlobalGiving. PTP operates across Sudan, focusing on rural areas like Darfur, South Kordofan, Blue Nile, the Eastern region, and White Nile. Through its emergency response and early recovery program, PTP provides water, food, medications, health services, and school supplies to Sudanese people dealing with the hardships of war. Their team collaborates with Emergency Response Rooms (ERRs) and is a member of the Localization Coordination Council (LCC), a collective aimed at streamlining funding efforts nationwide. PTP became a partner of  GlobalGiving after we made a combined commitment alongside other funders to provide $6.5 million in funding and technical resources to support ERRs and locally-led NGOs in Sudan. 

Even before the war began on April 15, 2023, Sudan was already in a severe humanitarian crisis, with 15.8 million people in need of aid. The conflict has worsened conditions, displacing 14.6 million people and leaving over half the population – 30.4 million – in need of support. Millions have fled to Egypt, Chad, and South Sudan, all facing their own crises and challenges. The UN has requested $6 billion for its 2025 response to aid 21 million people in Sudan and refugees, but it is unlikely that the funds will meet even a fraction of the urgent needs.

Flexible funding from GlobalGiving is critical for nonprofits like PTP. Similar to hundreds of partners in the GlobalGiving network, PTP has been severely impacted by the USAID funding cuts, with most of its major peacebuilding, food aid, and livelihoods programs dependent on these institutional resources. Devastatingly, about 80% of the 1,460 community kitchens across Sudan were shut down when USAID paused all funding, putting even more pressure on organizations like PTP to fill gaps in need. 

But community organizations like PTP are doing more than just responding to the world’s largest humanitarian crisis that is Sudan emergencies. They are also laying the foundation for future prosperity and independence by implementing livelihood programs, such as sewing projects for women. Thank you for your generous contribution to the Sudan Emergency Fund. Your donations continue to make a difference, ensuring Sudanese have access to food, temporary shelter, and urgent relief following their displacement from conflict and flooding disasters. 

In the past five months, the humanitarian situation in Sudan has worsened significantly. Famine was declared in Zamzam camp and western Sudan as a cholera epidemic spreads. Ongoing violence between government and militia forces, along with mass floods between July and August, has displaced tens of thousands of people.

With your donation to the Sudan Emergency Fund, we are making several grants to high-impact and community-led nonprofit organizations at the forefront of this crisis. This includes multiple new partners of GlobalGiving who are working closely with Emergency Response Rooms to get aid to the most difficult regions of Sudan. Here is a short description of some of the critical work you’ve supported: 

• Darfur Women Network (DWN) is a Darfuri, women-led organization that continues to support Sudanese refugees along the Chad-Sudan border and those still trapped in Darfur. With GlobalGiving funds, DWN will distribute food and aid in ZamZam camp and surrounding famine-stricken areas. Thanks to the organization’s strong community ties, they can navigate aid blockades and conflict zones effectively to get resources where others cannot.

• Sagadaat-USA is a Sudanese diaspora-led organization that recently launched a flood appeal to address the needs of thousands of Sudanese impacted by this summer’s floods. With GlobalGiving’s support, the organization will provide clean water, temporary shelter, hygiene supplies, and emergency sanitation facilities to Sudanese internally displaced. In addition, the organization continues to run community kitchens and food distribution projects across the country to address malnutrition and conflict-driven hunger.

• Nile Care Advocacy for Peace and Development (NILECAPD) is a South Sudanese organization providing survival kits to individuals fleeing conflict in Sudan, along with other essential goods and hot meals. Over 24,000 refugees have arrived in Renk County, South Sudan with severe needs. With a strong presence in Renk, NILECAPD is well-positioned to continue distributing aid to those most in need through door-to-door visits and community meetings. 

• ONG Sahkal is a Chadian organization providing Sudanese refugees with critical supplies upon their entry to Chad. The organization is a key partner of UN agencies and INGOs, including UNICEF and OXFAM, which helps ONG Sahkal know how to best fill gaps in unmet community needs. Funds from GlobalGiving will be used for ongoing food distributions and social services, particularly in Adre, a major aid entry point and refugee reception center.
