Summary
Individuals with Down syndrome remain a marginalized community with limited access to opportunities that support independence and meaningful inclusion. KDSP – A Down Syndrome Organisation serves as a comprehensive, one-stop platform advocating for the value, acceptance, and inclusion of individuals with Down syndrome. KDSP provides high-quality, subsidized or free-of-cost services to individuals and their families across key service areas, including Early Childhood Intervention (Physical, Occupational, and Speech Therapies), Education, Skills Development, Healthcare, Family Support, and Awareness now in five facilities;
1. KDSP Development Center
2. KDSP Learning Center
3. KDSP Karachi's Third Chapter
4. KDSP Islamabad Chapter
5. KDSP Faisalabad Chapter
Problem Statement
Currently, KDSP has over 2,800+ individuals in its Family Network; however, there are an estimated 300,000 individuals with Down syndrome across Pakistan, highlighting the significant unmet need for support and services nationwide.
Down syndrome is a genetic condition resulting from a full or partial extra copy of the 21st chromosome, affecting development and independent living. Individuals with Down syndrome face compounded barriers, including limited access to early intervention therapies, inclusive education, skills development opportunities, affordable healthcare, family support mechanisms, and public awareness. KDSP addresses these interconnected gaps to improve quality of life and inclusion.
Our Approach
KDSP delivers a comprehensive range of services to individuals with Down syndrome and their families through its state-of-the-art facilities. These include Early Childhood Intervention therapies (Physical, Occupational, and Speech-Language), inclusive education through partnerships with mainstream schools, preschool and remedial programs, skills development initiatives, and access to quality healthcare services. KDSP also provides informational, emotional, and financial support to families, alongside awareness-raising initiatives such as campaigns and community events.
Expected Impact
Over the long term, KDSP’s support will enable individuals with Down syndrome to lead independent and fulfilling lives. This will be achieved through attainment of key developmental milestones such as walking and communication; development of physical, cognitive, social, and vocational skills including art and music; access to equitable educational opportunities alongside typically developing peers in mainstream inclusive schools; improved health outcomes; strengthened family support systems; and increased inclusion within a more accepting society.
