So much has been happening across our ECD programmes, and we’re excited to share some highlights from the past few months that speak to the heart of our work: creativity, connection, and community.
To kick off the year, we were completely inspired by Banyana, one of our brilliant ECD Level 4 trainers, who shone during a resource-making workshop that reminded us how much beauty can come from the simplest materials. Using recycled items, Banyana made colourful, imaginative educational toys, by hand, and with love. The process showed not only skill but also a deep understanding of what young children need to learn and thrive. It was a perfect example of how passion and resourcefulness can turn even the most overlooked materials into tools for learning and joy.
In Orange Farm, our ECD Teacher Mentorship and Marimba teams came together to bring a burst of music into early learning spaces. The marimba workshop was filled with rhythm, laughter, and possibility - showing our mentees how powerful music can be in the development of young minds. This was just the beginning, and we’re hopeful that soon, marimbas will become part of every Teacher Mentorship Hub’s toolkit. It was such an energising day, and it left everyone dreaming a little bigger.
In March, we had a very special visitor from Germany. Björn, from Friends of Education Africa gGmbH, spent time with our team and visited three of our training centres in Pretoria. From the moment he walked in, it was clear he wasn’t there just to observe, he was there to connect. He chatted with the women in our Train the Teacher programme, asked questions, listened carefully, and soaked in the joy and colour of our learning environments. His visit meant a great deal to all of us, and we’re incredibly grateful for the support and friendship we continue to receive from our international partners.
We also grew our mentorship team in a big way. A warm welcome goes out to our newest team members: Butikie and Sibongile, who have joined as Teacher Mentorship Interns, and Acquilla, who’s come on board as a Teacher Mentorship Assistant. They’ve brought new energy, ideas, and excitement to the programme, and we can already see the impact of their support on the ground.
And then came April with big news. We officially welcomed our 2025 Teacher Mentorship cohort: 60 newly qualified teachers based in Soweto and Orange Farm. These incredible women are now receiving one-on-one guidance and in-classroom support from our mentors as they step into their roles as educators. It’s a huge leap, from theory to practice, and we’re so proud to be walking that journey alongside them. The ripple effect this has in their communities can’t be overstated.
April also marked something very close to our hearts: Education Africa’s 33rd birthday. On 27 March, we hosted our first-ever Founder’s Day celebration at the Sasfin Auditorium in Johannesburg. It was a moment to reflect on how far we’ve come since James Urdang first started this organisation in 1992. The evening highlighted the impact of our ECD programme through a live performance that brought the project to life on stage, followed by panel discussion on the importance of early learning.
In May, we had yet another proud moment, this time for one of our own. Thuli, a much-loved Train the Teacher trainer in Braamfontein, graduated with a Diploma in Grade R from SANTS. Her achievement is more than a personal milestone; it’s a beautiful reminder that learning is lifelong, and that our trainers are also growing and evolving alongside their students. We’re so proud of you, Thuli!
And finally, the new Teacher Mentorship cohort hit the ground running. On Saturday, 3 May, we held our first livestream session, led by the ever-energetic Sibongile. It was fun, interactive, and full of that unmistakable “first day of school” buzz. These sessions are creating safe spaces where teachers can share openly, learn together, and feel part of something bigger. Our trainers have also been making in-person visits, connecting with each mentee at their ECD centres to offer practical, tailored support.
It’s been a few months packed with colour, connection, and celebration. Whether it’s turning waste into wonder, sharing rhythms of marimba in a preschool classroom, or cheering on our amazing teachers as they take their first steps, it’s clear: change really does start here, in the early years.
We’re grateful to everyone who makes this possible, and we’re excited for what’s still to come!
