Learning Beyond the Floods

During January, several of our Early Childhood Development (ECD) centers in rural South Africa were affected by heavy flooding. As a result, the opening of some centers was delayed, and minor structural damage occurred at a few sites. Fortunately, the damage was not severe, and no major safety concerns were reported.

Local teams worked quickly to assess the situation and carry out necessary repairs and clean-up. Thanks to their efforts and community support, most centers were able to reopen shortly after the floods subsided.

We are pleased to report that children have now returned to their learning environments. They are once again engaging in play-based learning activities that support their cognitive, social, and emotional development. Teachers and caregivers have noted high levels of enthusiasm and happiness among the children as they resume their routines.

Despite the challenges posed by the floods, the resilience of our communities and staff has ensured continuity of care and education. The project remains on track, and we continue to provide safe, nurturing spaces for young learners.

We are grateful for the ongoing support of GlobalGiving and our donors, which makes it possible for us to  maintain early childhood education in vulnerable rural areas.
