How do we respond during compounding crises?
By Ehab Elsawaf | Senior Major Gifts Officer
The devastation caused by last years' earthquake in Afghanistan was compounded by the country’s limited health infrastructure and ongoing experience with conflict, drought, and climate disaster. Our work to support vulerable communities was especially critical as an influx of displaced people arrived in cities without a way to pay for food, rent, or fuel to heat their homes.
Thanks to your support, ActionAid has provided 10,000 families across Afghanistan with:
- Cash support for food, fuel, and heating equipment.
- Winter clothing, blankets, and pillows.
- Emergency food assistance and safe water.
- Sanitation and hygiene support, including hygiene kits for women and girls.
- Counseling support for displaced people, to help address the stress and anxiety of the situation.
Our unique humanitarian signature is designed to meet short and long term needs in the face crisis. It is our federation-wide, nonnegotiable approach to preparedness, response, and recovery which all interventions must adhere to. Examples of our signature include:
- Shifting the Power: ActionAid’s presence and relationships with local organizations in communities where we work are enhanced through our response, continually expanding on local capacity. We enable local leadership to design and implement programs, and support local leaders to access national funding and advocacy opportunities.
- Accountability to Affected Communities: Effective humanitarian response means that all stakeholders are accountable to affected communities. ActionAid works with communities and local organizations to support them to hold powerful decision makers to account, and to ensure that they are responding appropriately to the needs expressed by the communities themselves.
- Sustainability and Resilience: Underlying the Humanitarian Signature, it is crucial to link emergency response to resilience-building and longer term sustainable change, including empowering individuals, training them to know and advocate for their rights, and addressing underlying inequalities through all of our programming.
Thank you for being a champion of this work! If you can, please consider sharing this project within your network so we can continue to support families in Afghanistan.

We Continue to Support Afghanistan
By Kaelyn DiCocco | Development Intern
Thank you so much for your support of this project. I am writing to share some updates from ActionAid’s emergency response in Afghanistan. We appreciate you taking time to learn and act in response to this crisis.
Last year, Afghanistan experienced a devastating earthquake which resulted in displacement, bereavement, and more than 1,000 deaths. This tragedy was compounded with an ongoing hunger crisis in the region. Therefore, we took immediate action. More than 1,000 families have received ready to eat food packages, and more than 380 people received unconditional cash transfers from ActionAid. We also deployed a team that assisted in providing permanent housing for over 50 families. ActionAid continues to support individuals, families, and communities with resources during the aftermath of this earthquake.
You have made our humanitarian work possible, and we thank you for your support and solidarity. Thank you for being part of the ActionAid team.

Supporting Afghanistan as Winter Approaches
By Daniel Russell | Development Intern

Thank you so much for your support of this project. I’m writing to share some updates from ActionAid’s emergency response in Afghanistan. We appreciate you taking the time to learn about and act in response to this crisis.
As winter approaches, there are almost 20 million people – just under half the population – living in acute food insecurity in Afghanistan, with the vast majority of the population also living below the poverty line. Afghans are now waiting for the next harvest season so that they may be able to eat again. However, the combination of drought; extremely high food, fuel, and fertilizer prices; and a reduction in international grant support means that prospects for the people of Afghanistan are dire.
As part of its response to the recent earthquake, ActionAid and its partners have supplied 1,000 families with food packages, as well as providing 388 families with unconditional cash transfers to help them recover. We have also worked to provide life-saving food support to 10,000 families in other parts of Afghanistan as we look to provide long-term to support Afghan families. ActionAid is on the ground working to provide shelter support before the winter arrives.
Now more than ever, your commitment to justice makes a difference. Thank you for your support and solidarity.
