Summary

In Livingstone, Zambia at the Mama Bakhita Cheshire Home, children with severe disabilities receive free education, physical therapy, meals and more. Without this center, these young people would be at home with very little to do. Time and the occasional severe storm have badly damaged the roofing and ceilings of the school. The hydrotherapy room is unused for lack of repairs and should be rehabilitated. Please help us with phase one of restoring this vital resource.

Challenge

The school badly needs structural repair, a washing machine, and a new school bus. We are concentrating on one project at a time, in this case, repair of the roofs and ceilings that are disintegrating. Any proceeds beyond that needed for the roof repair will go to fixing the hydrotherapy room and pool which would improve the level of physiotherapy for children with cerebral palsy and other muscular disorders.

Solution

At present, school is being held on the two verandas outside of the class rooms because no one wants their education to halt, if possible. The children are enthusiastic social people and learners, undaunted by what others might see as restrictive handicaps. But there is no question that these repairs will restore normalcy to daily life.

Long-Term Impact

The services offered by the Mama Bakhita are vital to this community of families with children who have disabilities. Not only do they offer therapy and education and socialization, but also provide the bulk of their daily food requirements. Many of the children needed well-made wheelchairs to move about at school, home and town, which was the goal of the last GlobalGiving fundraiser, thank you very much. Little by little, partnering with GlobalGiving and you allows us to support their needs.
