Support marginalised girls' education in Morocco

UK-registered charity Education For All Morocco (EFAM) is proud to announce that 66 girls supported through its boarding and scholarship programme have successfully passed their baccalaureate and university exams this year – a record since the charity’s inception in 2007. This represents a life-changing achievement for girls from remote and underserved communities from across Morocco.

EFAM’s programme operates across Marrakech, the Atlas Mountains region, and Rabat - enabling girls from rural areas and marginalised backgrounds to access secondary school by providing safe accommodation and nutritious meals. It also provides educational support and scholarships. Without this support, most of these girls would not have had the opportunity to continue their studies beyond primary school.

“We are immensely proud of every one of these 66 young women,” said Samira El Hachioui, Managing Director for EFAM. “For disadvantaged girls growing up in Morocco, simply reaching secondary school is a major hurdle - passing the baccalaureate and graduating from university is a remarkable achievement.

“Many of these girls are also the first in their families to reach this level of education - coming from homes where often their mothers never had the chance to learn to read or write. These results are not only a testament to their hard work and determination to succeed, but also a powerful step towards independence.”

Passing the baccalaureate opens doors to higher education, vocational training, and career paths that were previously out of reach - helping to break cycles of poverty, early marriage, and illiteracy that still affect many girls in Morocco’s rural regions.

“I am currently pursuing a degree in Digital Engineering, a field with great potential for innovation and social change in Morocco”, said Safa Faks, a recent baccalaureate graduate and recipient of a university scholarship. “My aim is to advance in my career and contribute significantly to my community, especially in bridging the digital divide in underserved areas.”

EFAM’s boarding programme launched in 2007 and currently supports over 350 girls each year to continue their education beyond primary school. Over the years, more than 200 girls have gone on to attend university. EFAM works in close partnership with trusted local associations to co-manage and deliver long-term, high-impact programmes - championing girls’ rights to education, independence, and opportunity.

This year’s results reflect not only the academic achievements of the girls, but also the ongoing commitment of donors, educators, and community leaders who believe in the power of girls’ education to transform lives.

We’re writing to update you on what your support has helped us achieve in the past year following the devastating September 2023 earthquake in Morocco, and the growth of our initiatives since. Thanks to your generosity and solidarity, we have been able to move forward with optimism and renewed hope.

Post-Earthquake Rebuild: Demolition Begins in Asni
It has been over 18 months since a 6.9 magnitude earthquake tore through the region where we operate, destroying five of our six boarding houses in Asni. In that moment, EFA Morocco - a small charity with no experience in disaster response - was suddenly faced with a monumental task: to get girls back into school, rebuild homes, and restoring the hope of young girls to be able to return to school. 

With incredible commitment, our team moved swiftly. By January 2024, we had secured and staffed two temporary rental houses in safer locations, enabling dozens of girls to return to education. Over the year, this expanded - and by the start of the next academic, we were supporting 198 students, nearly 80% of our original cohort. This is an extraordinary achievement given the regional instability, teacher strikes, and government restrictions.

We’re proud to share that demolition of our damaged Asni houses has now been done. After navigating delays with land and bureaucracy - common in post-disaster recovery - we’ve received official confirmation of a new land donation from the Moroccan government: a 1,300m² plot in central Asni. Located within walking distance of both the lycée and collège, it will allow us to build a new home for up to 100 girls. Architectural plans are already underway.

However, this progress comes with a steep cost: our operating budget has more than doubled due to rent, food inflation, staffing, and expanded logistics. While our emergency appeal is nearing its end, we continue to welcome donations - especially to help cover daily operations during this critical phase.

Academic Progress: Girls Complete Their Baccalaureate
Amid all the disruption, our girls kept going - and so did we. We are now eagerly awaiting the exam results post Baccalaureate and hoping that the girls will once again be successful in graduating. Last year, the full cohort of 26 students graduated with a 100% pass rate - a phenomenal result and a testament to their resilience and our team’s unwavering support.

Centre Malaika Celebrates a National-Level Victory
Centre Malaika - one of EFAM’s initiatives that supports girls with Down syndrome - recently won the National Prize for Inclusive Theatre at the National Inclusion Theatre Competition. An immensely proud moment of joy and recognition for a team that works tirelessly to promote inclusion, dignity, and creative expression.
