Happy New Year. Thank you to everyone who continues to support our work.
Indonesia untuk Kemanusiaan (IKa) is a civil society resource organization founded in 1995 by human rights and democracy advocates in Indonesia. It was formed from the thinking of human rights and democracy figures in Indonesia, and was established as a bridge for resources to strengthen humanitarian movements at the grassroots level. IKa is committed to the values of social justice through several roles, one of which is supporting survivors and victims of human rights violations.
In recent years, IKa’s concern for victims, particularly those who are now elderly, has been expressed through fundraising and the distribution of funds during major public holidays in Indonesia - moments that are generally celebrated nationwide and associated with joy. For this reason, December, as a time when Christmas is celebrated, was chosen as a symbol of care for those who have experienced violence and discrimination. The distribution of funds to elderly survivors (Si Mbah) is understood by IKa as an effort to care for memory and as a moment of appreciation for those who have struggled for dignity and humanity.
This year, we selected Eastern Indonesia as the location for the distribution of the “Si Mbah” Christmas gift packages, with total donations amounting to IDR 7,290,000. These funds were distributed through IKa’s Pundi Insani program.
Eastern Indonesia was chosen because this region has never previously received Pundi Insani grant support in the form of Christmas gift packages, and also because a large proportion of the population in Eastern Indonesia celebrates Christmas.
Below are testimonies from recipients of IKa’s Pundi Insani Christmas support.
Mama Dominika (73) is an elderly woman farmer who currently lives with her husband and one grandchild. Her children have migrated elsewhere to earn a living. To support her family, even at her advanced age, she remains active working in the fields. As a farmer, in addition to facing uncertainty in planting seasons due to climate change, she and her family also struggle to obtain fertilizer. “We struggle greatly just to get fertilizer,” she said.
The same holds true for Adrianus (75). In January 2025, his home and crops were leveled to the ground as a result of forced eviction. Despite this, Adrianus chose to remain at the site of conflict. For him, the land is not merely a place to live, but a symbol of dignity that must be defended.
Both of them are elderly people who, despite having experienced violence and human rights violations, continue to endure and even serve as examples of life itself. Meanwhile, the state continues to neglect their welfare.
To ensure that donors’ trust reaches the right hands, IKa collaborates with local partners known for their consistency in accompanying communities who are struggling to defend their rights to justice and truth. This collaboration is carried out with PBH Nusra, which frequently provides legal assistance to communities who have been oppressed and deprived of their right to live with dignity, and Jaringan Perempuan Indonesia Timur (JPIT) in Kupang, East Nusa Tenggara, which has long been committed to safeguarding the rights of women and vulnerable elderly people.
Through this network, support was distributed in ways that were specific to the needs of each area. A total of 25 elderly people accompanied by PBH Nusra (17 women & 8 men) received basic necessities, including rice, coffee, sugar, tea, and cooking oil. Meanwhile, for the 22 beneficiaries under the accompaniment of JPIT, support focused on health and sanitation needs, such as balm, allergy medicine, massage oil, adult diapers, as well as basic food packages. This careful attention to specific needs is a concrete reflection of how our solidarity reaches into the most personal aspect of their everyday lives.
A Restorative Touch
The support collected through the “Si Mbah” fundraising effort was ultimately distributed as a tangible expression of solidarity. For the Si Mbah we accompanied, these gift packages were not merely logistical assistance, but a message that they are not forgotten and they are not struggling alone. It affirms that solidarity is present, and that others are walking alongside them.
Adrianus shared his emotions with deep gratitude:
“This is a memory, proof that the relationship with IKa remains. For some time, there was no news, but today, we heard from them again and received Christmas gifts. We are happy. Thank you, IKa. Hopefully we will meet again another time.” - Adrianus, assisted by PBH Nusra.
For Mama Dominika and Adrianus, this attention is a form of respect for their courage in sustaining life in the remote corners of the country. Thank you for being part of this humanitarian journey.
