Summary

Since 1925 the Spafford Children's Center (SCC) in East Jerusalem has served the Palestinian population. Currently, SCC provides treatment for trauma reactions in children who have experienced violence in their communities. Children struggling in the overcrowded schools in Palestinian neighborhoods receive individualized tutoring in Arabic, English, and math. SCC provides speech and occupational therapy; art, dance, music, and recreational programs; and child development classes for parents.

Challenge

Palestinian children live with political unrest that can trigger stress reactions and learning challenges. At least 80% of Palestinian children in East Jerusalem have experienced some form of psychological trauma due to exposure to violence, political instability, and military operations. A 2025 report indicated a shortage of 2,247 classrooms needed to meet the needs of Palestinian students in East Jerusalem. With more than 50 students per class, children with special needs are often overlooked.

Solution

SCC trauma specialists train Arabic, English, and math teachers to recognize how trauma affects learning. Through SCC remedial courses students make measurable progress in each 11-week session. Recreational programs at SCC include art, music, and dance. Children also participate in games in the courtyard and large activity rooms. Each summer SCC hosts a three-week camp with cultural trips, swimming, and activities. Spafford youth serve as counselors along with teachers and staff.

Long-Term Impact

This GlobalGiving project will help children stay current with their school classes. They will be less likely to drop out of school and more likely to find employment as young adults. When mothers and children learn how to handle the trauma in their daily lives their communication improves and family discord is reduced. SCC contributes to the goal of peace by helping assure that vulnerable Palestinian children have an opportunity to succeed and thrive.
