Your generous donations are supporting the purchasing of rangefinders, compasses and camera traps for the Big Cat Research program in Maasai Mara.
The Big Cat Monitoring occurs every day, monitoring the movements, behaviors and numbers of these cats within the conservancy. Leopards are very sneaky and can sometimes go unnoticed so to learn more about them and their movement patterns, camera traps are very useful, especially at night! Adult lions also tend to wonder off the conservancy into the closely located community, which lends itself to human-wildlife conflict, as the community members want to get rid of the lions who steal and kill their animals they own for sustainability. Having the camera traps can help prevent the movement of the cats and the impact on communities.
The volunteers at the conservancy capture data on the number of animals. The local staff use ‘The Wild’ app, designed by a University, which captures this data. The rangefinders help know the distance the animals are in relation to the data collection team, while the compasses help The Wild app with GPS points of the animals. All these tools help with understanding trends to assist with prevention and conservation efforts and also hopefully better equip rangers to deal with human-wildlife conflict!
We are eager to continue to raise funds for this special and deserving project. Once more funds become more available, the tools will be purchased. We look forward for you to continue to follow our journey!
