The Olives Rehabilitation Centre (ORC) was established in 2001 by local resident Stevens Were in order to address the lack of access to primary education for children living in Bombolulu and the resultant low levels of literacy. The centre operates as an independent, not for profit primary school, offering free or affordable education to children identified as the most needy, in an area where government primary schools are too few and understaffed to accommodate the children of Bombolulu.
In January 2012 a ten year dream for Olives Rehabilitation Centre was realised thanks to the dedicated staff team. Extra classes have been built for the "baby" classes, meaning the school has the space to retain Standard 8 (the final year of primary school education in Kenya)
In March 2012 the Standard 8 students submitted all required registration documents, birth certificates and photographs to register for the Kenyan Certificate of Primary Education examination in November. Lack of formal identification is a common barrier to students in slum schools being formally registered for certification and without the assistance of the school leaders it would have been impossible for the students to gather these documents. Being able to sit KCPE exams will mean the students will have the basic formal qualification required for further studies and employment in Kenya.
