Q2 Unfolds at Nyota Ingar'ayo

Lunch time!

Dear Supporters,

End of Term and School Holidays

The start of April saw the end of the first term here at Nyota Ing’arayo. After finishing exams and participating in a school assembly, standard 8 students were treated to a day out to have some fun and relax. They travelled to a local backpackers hostel where they enjoyed games, including volleyball and basketball, swimming and a delicious lunch of chicken stew, rice, chapati and juice.  It was a real treat for these kids who are under a lot of pressure during their last year of primary school.

After three weeks holiday school resumed on Tuesday 2nd May and with the new school term came the rain which continued throughout May and into June. However the rain didn’t manage to dampen the enthusiasm of students or teachers who remain committed to working to achieve great results for themselves and their school.

June Highlights

  • Nyota music students competed for the first time in a music festival. They did an excellent job and managed to qualify for the first two levels and achieved the fifth position at the third level. Congratulations to all the children and their music teacher Madam Damiana, it was a great learning experience and lots of fun.
  • Standard 5 and 6 participated in some Skype sessions with children from a school in Rockhampton, Australia. This was a follow-up to sessions they did last year and the children really enjoyed reconnecting with their new Aussie friends. The questions the children asked each other focused on topics such as school, friends, family, food and hobbies. The sessions are a wonderful experience for the children from both countries.
  • Girld from Std 4 up participated in a health education session and received Days for Girls feminine hygiene kits to ensure that they don’t miss days of school each month when they have their period. It was a great opportunity for the girls to gain an understanding of the physical and emotional changes that they experience during puberty. They were fortunate to have a nurse come along to the session to answer their questions.

Funding from this project, along with donations from other supporters of the school and a small income from the tuk-tuk business and school fees, enabled the continuation of the all-important food program and payment of rent, teachers wages and other school expenses.

Overall, it’s been another successful quarter for the Shining Stars of Nyota Ing’arayo with hard work, fun activities and support of many generous people.

Regards and thanks,

Brian (Nyota Manager) and Dianne (Volunteer)
