GG Report for Social Worker Fatma

By Lama Abed and Maria Syed | Staff Writer and Director of Development

Thank you for your support, which provides psychological and social assistance to vulnerable communities, including women, children, and the elderly in the Masafer Yatta area.

The instability and ongoing violence in the region continue to weigh heavily on families, particularly children, who live under constant fear and distress. Despite these challenges, Fatma remains committed to providing care and guidance through field visits, group sessions, and individual counseling. Her work is helping communities in Susya, Kalet Saleh, Aljawaya, Tuwany, Emfaqra, Alkahldeah, and other locations.

Child protection and safety training

  • Fatma organized awareness sessions for children to help them recognize unsafe areas, particularly those with settler activity.
  • She guided children on avoiding hazards such as exposed wells and unsafe structures, while emphasizing the importance of staying alert in risky situations.
  • A child who attended the training said, “Now I know how to protect myself and be more careful when walking outside.”

Psychological support for families facing violence

  • Children and families constantly fear settler attacks. Fatma held special sessions for mothers to equip them with tools to comfort their children and manage the constant stress.
  • After a violent settler attack, she worked closely with one mother, helping her to calm her children and develop better communication. The mother later shared, “We learned to be patient with our children and support them without shouting.”
  • Families said the sessions helped them feel more confident and better prepared to handle tough situations.

Mental health support for the elderly

  • Through home visits, Fatma offered emotional support to elderly individuals suffering from isolation, fear, and anxiety because of living under occupation and recurring violence.
  • These visits provided them with companionship and coping techniques to manage stress.

Women empowerment and parenting workshops

  • Fatma held workshops for stress management, self-confidence, and effective parenting.
  • These sessions encouraged positive communication within families, promoting non-violent approaches to parenting and helping women strengthen their resilience.

Support for individuals with special needs

  • Fatma worked with families with members who have disabilities, offering them care techniques and tips  to make them feel included and supported.
  • Activities included tailored counseling sessions and efforts to ensure they are heard within their families.

Challenges

Fatma faced many obstacles in doing her work. Road closures and checkpoints restricted movement, while frequent settler violence created constant danger. Despite these challenges, she continued to reach vulnerable families and provide them with much-needed psychological and social support.

With your ongoing support, we will continue to expand our reach, offering mental health support, child protection training, and empowerment opportunities for women and families. Your contributions bring hope, resilience, and healing to communities living under the shadow of violence and uncertainty.
