CHOSA Support Groups Spark Community Advocacy

By Ellie Hunja | Fundraising Coordinator, USA

Did you know that in South Africa, children are guaranteed the right to play?

The Children's Act defends every child's legal right to take part in safe, enriching recreational activities.

Unfortunately, the children we serve live in communities that have been systemically neglected - and this is evident when you look at their play spaces.

Each month, all of CHOSA’s partner projects gather for our monthly support groups: a chance to reflect on common challenges, support one another, and strategize. In May, a local advocacy organization, Movement for CARE (Collective Action and Racial Equity), joined the meeting and sparked a passionate dialogue about the unsafe state of a nearby playground.

At the end of the session, our partners decided to take action. They organized a park clean-up event that took place on Youth Day, June 16th. Volunteers mobilized and cleaned up the broken glass, rubbish, and other hazardous conditions at Baba Park in Mfuleni. The event brought together local leaders, community members, and friends of CHOSA to revitalize the space and to make an important statement about the need for safe, accessible play for children.

CHOSA will continue working with Movement for Care to assess every park in Mfuleni and submit those findings to the City of Cape Town to advocate for ongoing maintenance and investment in township play spaces.

This growing momentum from personal reflection to community advocacy highlights the power of CHOSA’s support groups as not only a place of connection for our partner projects, but as a driver of systemic change.

We will continue to advocate for safe, clean, inclusive play spaces for all of South Africa's children!

Your support makes all of this possible - thank you for investing in the Children of South Africa and the communities where they live.
