Precious' story - StreetBorn Tanzania

By karin joseph | Head of international programmes

In the last three months, the current cohort of 37 girls and young women on the StreetBorn programme has been approaching the end of their journey with Cheka Sana. After a year of receiving counselling, self defence sessions, participating in groupwork, receiving access to essential healthcare, support with parenting skills and business training in apprenticeship settings, they have received start up kits in their chosen trade. Although the intensive phase of the project is complete for them, they will be offered ongoing support and follow up from Cheka Sana's team as they step into the next phase of their futures.

Precious 18, found herself living on the streets with no support system, after the loss of her parents. While living on the streets, she became pregnant. During a night outreach session, Cheka Sana social workers identified Precious and immediately intervened. Given her situation, she was placed under the care of a 'fit person' (the equivalent of foster care) while efforts were made to locate her family. Social workers successfully traced Precious's aunt, who willingly accepted her into her home.

Cheka Sana provided Precious with continuous psychosocial support, including one-on-one counseling sessions and prenatal care by linking her to a health facility. With this support, she was able to give birth safely to a healthy baby girl.
Determined to rebuild her life, Precious was enrolled in a vocational training course in tailoring. Through transportation support provided by Cheka Sana, she managed to save money and start a small fruit-selling business alongside her studies. Additionally, she benefited from business training and trade selection sessions, equipping her with essential entrepreneurial skills.

Today, Precious is thriving—balancing her vocational training and small business while caring for her child. She continues to receive psychosocial support and counseling, which has strengthened her confidence and resilience. Her aunt is proud of her progress, and Precious is optimistic about the future, working towards financial independence and a better life for herself and her baby. "I thank Cheka Sana Tanzania for giving me a second chance in life. With their support, I received care, skills, and hope for a better future. Today, I am building a life for myself and my baby."

Thank you for your support of the StreetBorn programme. More girls like Precious will benefit from lifechanging support thanks to your donations. A new, larger cohort of young women and girls begins the StreetBorn programme this month. We look forward to updating you on its impact in the coming months.
