Summary

Nyaka's Sexual and Gender-Based Violence Program works to prevent sexual violence against anyone, especially children. We work with the community to create an environment where SGBV is not acceptable or tolerated. And whenever it is reported to us we take action. We have four healing centers where we provide medical care, counseling, and legal advocacy for all survivors of sexual and gender-based violence; girls and boys, women and men.

Challenge

In rural Uganda, sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV) remains a widespread and deeply rooted issue, particularly affecting women and children. Survivors often face stigma, silence, and a lack of access to medical care, counseling, or legal support. Many cases go unreported, and justice is rarely served. Without intervention, survivors are left to suffer alone, physically, emotionally, and economically, while communities struggle to break cycles of abuse and silence.

Solution

Nyaka addresses sexual and gender-based violence through prevention, response, and advocacy. We provide survivors with free medical care, counseling, legal support, and safe spaces at our Healing Centers. Our community outreach includes school programs, law enforcement training, and the Annual Nyaka Walk Against SGBV, which raises awareness and unites people in solidarity. By engaging communities and supporting survivors, Nyaka helps break the silence and create lasting change.

Long-Term Impact

Nyaka has already supported over 1,600 survivors and reached nearly 300,000 people with prevention education. Arrests of perpetrators have increased, and community attitudes toward gender-based violence are shifting. Survivors are healing, returning to school, and rebuilding their lives. Over time, this work is transforming norms, empowering young people, and creating safer communities. The impact is generational, ensuring that future children grow up with dignity, safety and hope.
