Literacy Celebration in Eastern Indonesia! (Q3)

By Stuart Patience | Board Member

Dear Supporters,

In August 2024 we received support from the Education Office of Kupang Regency to expand our literacy program in Eastern Indonesia to 8 more primary schools. This new phase, called Timor Suka Membaca (TSM) Phase II, runs from August 2024 to August 2025.

Together we can do so much more!
Thanks to this partnership and other donations, 12 first-grade teachers from these 8 schools received full curriculum packages. This support made it possible to share good teaching practices and encourage more schools to improve early-grade literacy. As part of the program, we held in June a special event called the Literacy Festival, designed to share our success and inspire others to join the literacy movement in Kupang and beyond.

Literacy Festival
The main celebration was held on 12 June, with over 300 participants, including school principals, teachers, and students. The day began with fun activities for students, including decorating literacy bags and reading books from a mobile library. Everyone also joined a 30-minute group reading of the book "Omi, Ubi dan Syukur", written by the YTA and a partner as part of a research project on climate change. To close the event, students played exciting literacy games, such as Literacy Snakes and Ladders. These activities helped students learn while having fun with peers from other schools.

By training teachers and providing resources in these remote areas, we are not just helping children today; we are supporting a greater change for them and their communities. As always, thank you for your continued support, which makes all of this possible!
