The "Functional and Digital Literacy for Women in DRC" project by OGDH-RDC ASBL aims to empower 100 women in South Kivu, Democratic Republic of Congo, through literacy and digital skills training. Over 10 months, 100 women aged 18-40 will receive training in writing, reading, and numeracy using smartphones. The project will be implemented in three phases across different neighborhoods, with a final month for monitoring and evaluation.
The South Kivu has been severely impacted by over a decade of conflict, leading to widespread displacement, poverty, and limited education access. Women are disproportionately affected, with a literacy rate of 39.9% and limited economic opportunities. The digital divide is pronounced, with minimal access to digital tools and training. This lack of education and digital literacy restricts women's potential to engage in meaningful economic activities, perpetuating poverty and marginalization.
To address these challenges, OGDH-RDC ASBL proposes a project offering functional and digital literacy training to women in South-Kivu. Over 10 months, 100 women aged 18-40 will receive training in writing, reading, and numeracy using smartphones. It includes community sensitization to change societal attitudes towards women's education and digital literacy. By investing in this project, donors will contribute to women's empowerment, breaking the cycle of poverty and promoting gender equality.
The project's long-term impact includes economic empowerment, enabling women to engage in diverse, higher-paying activities, thus improving living standards. Social transformation will likely follow, with women gaining higher status and participating more in community decisions. Educational advancement will create a foundation for further learning and a more capable workforce. Community development will benefit as empowered women invest in their children's education and health.
