Thank you for your generous donations to Support Girls’ Education in Afghanistan.
In the academic year 2025, we supported a total of 181 students (142 girls and 39 boys) in various regular schools and underground schools in Afghanistan. In addition, we supported an education center that serves 290 girls that offers classes in math, physics, chemistry, computer and English among other subjects. With this years tally, we have provided 1,671 scholarships (1,181 girls and 490 boys) since the start of the program in 2016.
From the inception of Bamyan’s Youth Education program in 2016, we have prioritized supporting community-led educational initiatives. Through such community-led programs, girls and boys continue their education in regular schools (boys and girls below grade 6), underground schools (girls above grade 6 who are banned from schools) and the education center for girls from grades 7-12. Due to our continues support and the impact on the ground, some of our schools have become well respected local institutions over the years.
This update is about the progress of the 142 girls in our schools, and we already have provided an update about the 39 boys via our Scholarships for at-risk youth project on January 20, 2026. The final exams took place in late November and December 2025.
Regaular and Underground Schools:
We are pleased to inform you that 133 girls passed their final exams. They will start the next grades in the following academic year. Six girls did not pass their final exams and will repeat the class. Three girls dropped out due to relocation.
The education center had the following achievements to report:
One of the graduates of the education center has begun her studies at a US university. Her journey has an immense positive impact on the other girls at the center that having a strong academic foundation will help towards obtaining scholarships abroad.
The 2026 academic year begins in March, and we are committed to supporting our schools and students during the new academic year.
Please know that your generous gifts keep our schools afloat. The scholarship fund covers tuition and stationary costs of our students each year. Since we pay the schools, the school in turn use the funds for teacher salaries, books and stationary, heater, firewood/coal and snow removal equipment. Not only the students receive an education, women teachers make a livelihood and the schools remain operational.
At a time when the Taliban government has banned girls and women’s education and freedom in Afghanistan – our schools provide an opportunity for girls to learn, excel in their academics and prepare for college as they progress through the grades. Despite the bleak outlook, many of them are dreaming of college and university to become nurses, teachers, doctors and engineers. As the saying goes, a picture is worth a thousand words, the photos truly demonstrate the conditions and situation our schools operate and the safe space our community leaders have created for the students (please see photos and we urge you to read the attached letters).
While the ban on education and employment continues indefinitely, the Taliban government recently issued their “Criminal Procedure Code for Courts”, and it contains profoundly disturbing language towards women and minorities. According to the Afghan human rights organization, Rawadari, “the contents of this document are deeply concerning and stand in clear contradiction to international human rights standards and the fundamental principles of fair trial. The document legalizes and formalizes discrimination against religious minorities and the suppression of individuals’ basic freedoms, including violations of human dignity, restrictions on freedom of expression and thought, and arbitrary arrest and punishment.” For more, please see the link associated with Rawadari below.
Despite the challenges, we are committed to continue supporting our schools and the brave educators and community leaders who risk their lives to provide opportunities for girls to have access to education.
Thank you for your continued support,
Timor + the Bamyan Foundation Team
