At the age of 5, Maria was involved in a domestic accident that would change her life. Thanks to medical care, her physical wounds healed, but now, 10 years later, she faces a situation that many teenagers find difficult to cope with. She needs a hair expander that requires surgery. The goal is to reduce the alopecia she suffers from and contribute to her physical and emotional well-being for her personal development. Her family is poor and cannot cope this situation.
Maria is happy to have a family that cares for and supports her in this misfortune that life has brought her. When she receives her treatments at Aniquem, she talks to us about her plans, but also about her friends, and that is when a sadness appears on her face; she would also like to look like her friends, who are already beginning to worry more about their physical appearance and socialising, which is what all teenagers want to achieve.
Maria's family does not have the financial resources needed to purchase this hair expander and pay for surgery, as they are among the lowest income groups in Peru. We want to give Maria this opportunity that will truly improve her life: she will be able to rebuild the self-esteem she so desperately needs and that teenagers cling to in order to get ahead in their social groups and have the opportunity to live a secure life after what she has been through since the age of 5.
Through the comprehensive and psychological rehabilitation we offer, our young patients not only receive the necessary medical treatment, but also learn to live with their external and, above all, internal scars. Our ultimate goal is to improve their quality of life so that patients can lead normal lives and become ambassadors for prevention in their communities, along with their families. By spreading messages about prevention, they can help us reduce the number of burn accidents in Peru.
