This project will ensure the continued, reliable supply of clean water to 3000 Maasai villagers in North Eastern Tanzania, for drinking, cooking, cleaning and livestock rearing. In this region, surface water is scarce for 8 months of the year, and this borehole provides the only source of clean water. This project will increase the pumping capacity to meet Munga village's needs through additional solar panels, as well as upgrading and maintaining existing distribution and storage infrastructure.
In Maasai regions of North Eastern Tanzania, surface water is almost non-existent for 8 months of the year. People walk over 5km in search of water, or must buy from boreholes which pump water from 200m underground. Traditionally powered by diesel generators, high maintenance fees and increasing diesel costs are encouraging communities to switch to cost saving, reliable and clean solar energy. Munga village have a solar system but it needs upgrading to cover all their water needs on cloudy days.
We will add 15kW of solar panels to the existing solar system at Munga village to enable the existing water pump to run at full speed throughout the day, even during cloudy periods, ensuring the water needs of the whole community are met. This will bring big cost savings to the community who are struggling to buy diesel and maintain their old diesel generator for additional pumping. We will also repair leaking pipes and tanks, and add more distribution points, improving water availability.
With the upgraded renewable solar energy system installed, the community will save over $7000 a year from no longer needing to pay for diesel for water pumping. These significant savings will allow them to better prepare for general solar system maintenance, pipe repairs, and water distribution infrastructure upgrades, bringing water access points even closer to people, saving women and children time. With continual access to clean, safe drinking water, water-borne diseases will also decrease.
